Although slower and less maneuverable than the Japanese A6M Zero, it proved effective thanks to its rugged construction, armor protection, and self-sealing fuel tanks. Developed by Grumman in the late 1930s, the Wildcat evolved from earlier biplane designs into an all-metal monoplane powered by a Pratt \u0026amp; Whitney Twin Wasp engine. After several redesigns, the improved XF4F prototype achieved over 333 mph, leading to a Navy order in 1939. Entering service in 1940, the F4F-3 carried four .50-caliber machine guns. Wildcats fought in major early-war actions, including Wake Island, Pearl Harbor, and the Coral Sea. American pilots used innovative tactics such as the “Thach Weave” to counter the more agile Zero.
