Though slower and less maneuverable than the Japanese Zero, it achieved solid combat success thanks to rugged construction, armor, and self-sealing fuel tanks. Effective tactics such as Lt. Cmdr. Jimmy Thach’s “Thach Weave” and hit-and-run ambushes offset performance disadvantages. Wildcats fought at Wake Island, Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadalcanal. The F4F-3 carried four .50-cal machine guns but suffered from gun-jamming issues.
