Designed by Willy Messerschmitt in 1934–35 for a single-engine day fighter requirement, it featured advanced elements for its time, including a low-wing design, retractable landing gear, and an enclosed cockpit. Early prototypes led to production models powered by Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines. The Bf 109 first saw combat in the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and later served throughout WWII in many variants. The Bf 109G-2 “Gustav,” powered by the DB 605 engine producing about 1,450 hp, retained the armament of one 20 mm MG 151\/20 cannon and two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns.
