Description
The A-7D Corsair II is an offensive aircraft of the U.S Air Force. The U.S Air Force acquired the U.S Navy's A-7A for its excellent ability and low cost as a successor of the F-100 Super Sabre to become its main aircraft. The D model is based on a greatly improved A-7A model. The TF30/TF-30 engines have been replaced by the allison TF41A-1/Turbo fan engines. Moreover, the aircraft was fitted with an APU (Auxiliary Power unit) to reinforce it. The fixed armament consists of one M61A1 Vulcan cannon instead of the previous two 20mm cannons. Finally, the inflight refuelling probe (the front drogue system has been changed to a flying boom) system and the nose landing gear catapult launch bar has been removed. The fuselage has been reinforced though the main strong point is the avionics improvement. For the first time a U.S military aircraft is equipped with a Head Up Display (H.U.D). Moreover the ECM ability has also been improved and it has recently received the addition of a Pave Penny laser illumination target detector.
