Battlefield airlifter, gunship, tanker, command post, drone-launcher, polar supply aircraft: the Lockheed Hercules performs more labours than its mythical namesake. Tough and versatile, the C-130 Hercules is the standard tactical transport of the West's major air forces, and has also been suppliedto other air arms the world over.
Hercules has won battle honours in American, Israeli and Britsh service. During the Vietnam War the rugged turboprop put down regularly at shell-battered khe Sanh to keep the beleaguered Marine garrison alive until the siege was lifted. In a spectacular feat of arms Israeli Hercules flew into Entebbe Airport to rescue the Airbus hostages. And in the Falklands War RAF C-130ks flew recordbreaking 26hr air-refuelled sorties to supply the Task Force with vital stores and personnel.
James Goulding's marvellous artwork shows you the bones and sinews of the world's most battle-hardened military transport, and Mike Gaines tells the Herc story from 1950s specification to the new roles, shapes and developments of the 1980s.
