Backed by loyal ground staff who toiled for long hours, sometimes in atrocious weather conditions, many hundreds of courageous young airmen – some of whom had come from the four corners of the globe to join the fight – went off, night after night, in their Whitleys, Wellingtons and Halifaxes, to take the war to the heart of the enemy's homeland.

Aircraft of this Group were the first to fly over Berlin – much to the embarrassment of Goering – and the first to bomb Italy. The casualty rate was horrific, especially in the early years of the war, and it was rare for a bomber crew to complete a 'tour' of thirty operations.

Twenty main chapters chart the progress of the Group through each stage of the conflict. The pre-war and post-war (transport) aspects are included, also the contribution made by the ground staff, the WAAF's and the 4 Group HQ personnel at Heslington Hall.

Ten appendices include such diverse subjects as the squadrons, the airfields and main aircraft types used by the Group, nose art and tail markings, the '100 Club' and airmen of No.4 Group who were awarded the Victoria Cross.

This profusely illustrated history, produced in a large glossy format, features many first-hand reports and is complemented by maps, line drawings and over 330 black and white photographs – many appearing in print for the first time.

The full colour cover features a specially commissioned painting by Keith Woodcock, GAVA.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0270/3015/9446/files/image2_325d5948-2b76-4f57-b794-76f47c18872f.jpeg?v=1778149423
https://aviation.brussels/products/from-hull-hell-and-halifax-an-illustrated-history-of-no-4-group-1937-1948
