Description

The Tupolev Tu-22 'Blinder' was the Soviet Union's first supersonic bomber air force from the 1960s. Nicknamed 'Blinder' by NATO, the Tu-22 entered production in 1959 and was first delivered to the Soviet Air Force in 1962. The aircraft continued in production until 1969. It was produced in several variants, including reconnaissance and electronic warfare versions. The Tu-22 was a mixed success as a bomber but performed well in other roles, particularly in combat reconnaissance and electronic jamming. It saw action over Afghanistan and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was also sold to other nations.

The Tu-22M 'Backfire' was developed by Tupolev during the 1960s as an advanced, variable-geometry wing version of the Tu-22. The variable-geometry wing gave the new aircraft considerable performance advantages over the standard Tu-22. The Tu-22M entered service with the Soviet Air Force in the 1970s. It was used in this capacity in Afghanistan in the 1980s. The Tu-22M features improved engines, new avionics, and a redesigned weapons bay.
