Description

What is fame ? Even the best known dictionaries do not agree on a precise definition. Some tell us that fame is not necessarily lasting in nature, others that, although " famous " usually indicates acclaim, it can sometimes be synonymous with " notorious ".

The aircraft described and illustrated in this volume all have a claim to fame, from Japan's briefly famous Karigane and the unquestionably notorious Junkers Ju 87 to such immortals as the Douglas World Cruiser, the Spirit of St. Louis and the Spitfire.

Inevitably, their stories tell also of many of the great aircraft designers, pilots and others who ensured their fame — or whose own fame stemmed from the aircraft they built or flew the Wrights, Bleriot, Alcock and Brown, Lindbergh, Post and Gatty, Mitchell, Gibson, Yeager, and many more. Sixty-four superb colour plates depict all sixty-eight main aircraft described, and include many smaller colour views detailing special insignia, structural features, route maps of noteworthy flights, or aircraft that played a part in the story of a famous successor.
