Description
Aircraft of the Aces is a series of books published by the British publisher Osprey Publishing on the theme of air combat aces and their aircraft.
Aircraft of the Aces is a series of softcover booklets designed by Tony Holmes in 1994, which focus on describing the combat pilots who became aces on a given aircraft type and operating in a given theatre of operations through first-hand accounts from these aces.
Aircraft profiles, lists, tables and scale drawings complete the text. All major air battles and theatres of operation are covered, from the first aces of the Great War to the Gulf War, the Second World War and the Korean War.
The Aircraft of the Aces series is a sought-after source of information for model aircraft builders, whether static or flying, and for military air history enthusiasts.
The series has become the most popular in Osprey Publishing's almost 30-year history. One of the reasons for the success of this series, in addition to the quality of the text and iconography, is the cover design by Iain Wyllie, whose artwork is recognised worldwide. After working as a draughtsman in the naval field, this Northern Irish native became an aviation painter, the equivalent of the French Air Force painters, in the late 1980s.
Each issue of the series consists of 96 pages and at least 30 profile drawings illustrated with period black and white photographs.
The first issue entitled Mustang Aces of the Eighth Air Force appeared in October 1994. The 96-page booklet includes 60 colour illustrations of Mustangs, dozens of black and white photographs from World War II, a chart showing the top aces of the 8th Air Force group by group. The colour plates are a real treat because of the colourful diagrams of the aircraft and the presence of nose art, the war paint applied to combat aircraft. These legendary aircraft include the Old Crow, Big Beautiful Doll, Glamorous Glen, The Hun Hunter from Texas and Cripes A' Mighty.
The series is still published in 2010.
