Initially viewed with scorn, Republic's F - 105 Thunderchief married a heavy powerplant with a sophisticated weapons system. She was eventually loved by those who used her and went on to serve the U.S.A.F. for 25 years during a period which included, in Vietnam, the greatest war of the era. The ’ Thud ’ was one of the most active aircraft in the war, F - 105D's dropping ordnance in the strike fighter role and then F - 105F's and F - 105G's making SAM - suppression their forte in the Wild Weasel role. The F - 105 was no slouch as a fighter either, accounting for dozens of MiG's ; and she was tough too, surviving some extensive damage that would have destroyed lesser breeds. In short, the Thunderchief was one of the greatest.
